Trigger warning. Graphic messages.
TMZ has obtained text messages between Jane Doe and Jonathan Newell from the days and weeks following her alleged assault at the Chi Phi house.
In the messages, Jane Doe is initially defensive, claiming that “non of the sexual stuff was illegal,” and “i really do love u and [Matthew Ingalls].” She described the encounter as a “gamgbang [sic]” where consuming k*****ne was “one of the most insane/jaw dropping moments of the night.”
Her legal team stated that the initial exchanges reflect the shock, denial, and processing common in the immediate aftermath of severe trauma. The lawsuit emphasizes that the student was incapacitated by drugs and alcohol, rendering her unable to give consent as additional fraternity members were invited into the room.
While local prosecutors initially declined to bring criminal charges, an internal university investigation resulted in the expulsion of two former students and the suspension of several others. With the case now drawing widespread attention and renewed scrutiny regarding campus safety, prosecutors have launched a new review into the allegations.
