Cornell has agreed to retain outside counsel for an independent investigation into how the university handled a reported 2024 sexual assault at the Chi Phi fraternity house. The agreement follows direct pressure from New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who spoke with the administration demanding answers and accountability amid intense public outcry.
The independent review comes after a civil lawsuit brought renewed national scrutiny to the “Cornell 7” case, in which a student reported being drugged and gang raped by multiple Chi Phi members. Local prosecutors also reopened the criminal case this week following widespread outrage over the initial lack of charges.
With students consistently demanding systemic accountability and genuine protections rather than administrative damage control, the outside counsel will examine Cornell’s reporting processes, official response, and campus culture. Hochul also announced plans to work with state lawmakers next session to strengthen campus safety standards across New York.
