Cornell is mourning the loss of Astronomy and Aerospace Engineering Professor James Lloyd, who passed away on July 15 in Ithaca at age 55. A member of the faculty since 2004, Lloyd worked at the intersection of spacecraft engineering and exoplanet discovery. Known for his hands-on mentorship, Lloyd led several student satellite missions and kept the Hartung-Boothroyd Observatory active for undergraduate teaching despite budget cuts. His pioneering work on astronomical imaging techniques helped shape instruments used on the James Webb Space Telescope. Beyond his academic legacy, Lloyd was a dedicated volunteer with Greek Peak Adaptive Snowsports and the Special Olympics, helping children with disabilities learn to ski. He is survived by his wife, Aoise, and three children. May he rest in peace.
