The Department of Justice revealed that hospital administrators repeatedly failed to investigate years of complaints from both staff and patients, allowing the abuse to continue unchecked for a decade. The hospital has paid or agreed to pay over $1 billion to survivors to settle civil claims. Alongside the financial settlement, Weill Cornell committed $30 million to launch a patient empowerment institute and overhaul its reporting and chaperone protocols. While university leadership insists the institution is safer today, advocates stress that accountability was delayed far too long by administrative negligence.
