The Cornell community is mourning the sudden and unexpected passing of Associate Professor Craig J. Fennie over the weekend. Fennie served as the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the School of Applied and Engineering Physics, where he was widely admired by colleagues and students alike. Before his outstanding academic career, Fennie took a unique path, spending years working as a bouncer in Philadelphia and playing guitar in a punk rock band. He ultimately earned his Ph.D. from Rutgers, joining the Cornell faculty in 2008. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship for his groundbreaking research in materials physics. Fennie is survived by his partner, Nicole Benedek, an associate professor in Cornell's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and their young son. May he rest in peace.
