President Michael Kotlikoff issued a university statement Friday detailing an incident of harassment following an Israel-Palestine debate. The president reported being followed to his car by a group of individuals who then surrounded the vehicle, banged on the windows, and blocked his exit.
According to the letter, the group included students and non-students with a history of campus conduct violations and previous campus bans. Kotlikoff described the encounter as a direct attempt at intimidation intended to silence speech within the academic community.
The administration’s memo emphasized that while vigorous debate is central to a Cornell education, physical harassment and disruption will not be tolerated. The president noted that he was eventually able to exit the parking lot by using his vehicle’s safety systems to navigate the crowd safely.
