Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke to a packed Call Auditorium yesterday to argue why the West is worth saving. Hosted by the Cornell Republicans and Young America’s Foundation, the event focused on the importance of global leadership and the resilience of free societies. He urged students to reject narratives of inevitable decline and instead embrace the intellectual freedoms that define the West.
The lecture combined serious geopolitical warnings with pointed humor, including a tale of bike-riding, an Elvis singing impression, and mockery at the Trump administration’s proposed Greenland takeover. He also shared personal stories about his own family connection to the university, noting that his great-grandfather was a Cornellian from the Class of 1902.
Long standby lines and heavy security didn’t stop the hall from filling up for the lecture. Students asked questions, which were chosen and presented by Cornell Republican president Max Whalen ‘26. Johnson spoke positively of his leadership during COVID and Brexit, and Ronald Reagan—all of which received some snickers and scoffs from the crowd.
